CHAPTER  14: BODY MAGNET PROGRAM
(c) Cupideros, November 13, 2006

"Hold on, RaydGalil!  I'm turning on the freeway."
"Why the freeway?"
"Better control over my environment and I'll easily know if we're being followed.  Here we go," Lucky speeds as he near the express ramp; he quickly maneuvered over to the fastest lane.  "There we go."
"You're going over 70 miles per hour?"
"That's a perfect speed for a lot of things.  One, preventing anyone from launching nanotechnology through the air ducts.  Very difficult to pick up the words with the windows lowered an 16th of an inch."  Sean gestures RaydGalil to lower his window.
"I see.” RadyGalil said, “The wind rush is a perfect white noise hiding our words."
"The Body Magnet Program is an effective method of spying using nonotechonology.  The point is to saturate the blood until its heavy with iron.  Then push or pull the body with the magnet device."
"How can it be used if no one can see it?"
"Computers.  Just like our Space Program has a command center.  The Body Magnet Program has a command center too.  Inside that command center the computers can switch to any area under surveillance, a house, car, business, an alley or pub or even the bathrooms in the shopping malls anywhere in the world.  They tune into the street corners and even view from the sidewalks and walls of any structure."
"You mean--"
"Surveillance is everywhere these days.  You cannot have an orderly run society and responsible citizenry without taking over those citizens obligations to behave.  Surveillance keeps them in line and--"
"Prevents them from thinking individual or different thoughts."
Lucky's face flashed embarrassment at RaydGalil.  "You seem."
"No.  I just remember my old Earth history.  In the final days, everyone and everything was under surveillance."
"That's exactly what led to the First and Final Nuclear War." Sean said, "I have to move ahead of grandma."
RaydGalil laughed.  "Don't laugh, Slith often used grandmas because no one suspect them.  She's reducing my speed."
"Oh."
"The Body Magnet Program combines the use of computer surveillance with GPS technology and food and water?"
"How disgusting?  Is there no level Slith will not sink?
"Are you kidding Slith pride themselves on doing what no sane person would do; attacking things and people no sane person, not even the worse serial killer would attack; Slith prides itself on being unscrupulous to the extent even its own members are afraid of it and--"
RadyGalil said, "Follow their orders like robots"
"The very freedom Slith members have comes at such a high cost; the members deny all reasonable life.  They must tell themselves a series of lies and lies supporting those lies until finally they come to believe they are God seeing everyone and everything that moves on the earth.  Hence their willingness to nuke each other."
RadyGalil agreed, "Yes, but if even one person slips by and one random event occurs that they cannot control...then they grow increasingly paranoid."
"That's why they spy on everything and will stoop so low as to hurt anyone of anything connected to what they label as the target."
"Enemy."
"But," Lucky said, now safely at 70 miles per hour, "They need plausible deniability."
"Plausible Deniability.  There is a slippery word."
"All the words in the Slith are slippery; this enables them to deny they said or did anything.  They choose words that put people to sleep; word whose surface meaning is soft, light and harmless.  But those words are anything of the sort."
"Poison Dove."
"Poison Dove." Lucky looks at RaydGalil.  Food, RaydGalil.  That's how they employ the Body Magnet.  They put microscopic magnetic pellets in the food and especially the water."
"Everyone needs those."
"A person can go without food for a long time.  Water, maybe 48 to 72 hours.  Then you got to have a drink."
"Can we taste it?"
"No.  The pellets can be seen if you were a Shaman."
"A Shaman?" RaydGalil said.
Lucky replied, "A man or woman with second sight."
"ESP."
Lucky agreed with a nod, "That's an archaic term, but yes.  Shaman sensibilities are phenomenon and there is the rub. Everyone is feed magnetic food and water."
"Everyone!  Even you!"
"Of course, but the Body Magnet works like a switch.  They turn on the nanotechnology and then it activates the pellets in the person's blood stream."
"Ah.  I recall a case of a protestor of the war dying of blood poisoning."
"Yes. They used the Body Magnet so many times and filled him with extra doses of iron pellets that his blood slowed and could not pump back to his heart.  He died of heart failure."
"And who would know the difference?"
"Any doctor doing an blood autopsy.  But Slith always surfaces to conveniently classify the destroyed blood test results as a strange blood poisoning.  Slith switches the blood report analysis before the report reaches the hand of the doctor.  There are many ways to subvert analysis and tests, RaydGalil.  Many ways exist to subvert democracies."
"Lies."
"Lies are not even the half of it, RadyGalil.  Sneaky Tricks.  That's defines Slith."
"Sneak Tricks like what?"
"Well like adjusting start speed on a car.  Like changing the home page on a computer to go to government advertisement medical sites and on the screen in the morning it flashes...DO YOU HAVE A HEART ATTACK?  Commercials privately delivered through old Ipod technology or newer transmitters to radio and television and CyberPages.  Switching one's caffeine-coffee for decaf."  Lucky laughs.
"That's not funny."
"No.  It's not and then they use their nonotechnology to fire short laser blast at your chest to give you fake pains.  Next, they use the same nonotechnology to pull on your heart muscles, which are filled, with magnetic pellets.  Back pains, coughs, leg pains, hand pains by placing the Body Magnet mist on one's body when they bath or use the bathroom, Slith can fake any pain on the medical list, unless one learns to remove the mist, dust.  Sometimes it’s white like chalk and you see it. Sometimes it is clear or invisible."
"I see.  So the person chest constricts and has palpatations like symptoms of a heart attack." RaydGalil touched his chest.
"You felt that?"
"Yes.  Open that glove compartment."
"What do you see?"
"Nothing but pieces of lint and scraps of paper."
"Sneaky right?"
"You're telling me those pieces of paper--I don't believe it?"
"Your chest is still hurting isn't it?"
"How did you know?"
"Pick up one of those pieces of lint or paper?"
RadyGalil picks one up.  "It's pulsating."
Lucky presses a switch on his driving wheel.  "Chest feel better?"
"Yes.  And the...the paper's stop pulsating."
"Sneaky, sneaky."
"Plausible Deniability.  Who would believe that pieces of lint or paper on the floor or wall are causing them a fake heart attack?"
"No one."
"Slith can create any number of symptoms, from shaking hands to make someone believe they are nervous when the cops or ambulance or fire truck drives by.  Breathless symptoms to make the person believe they are tired or having an asthma attack.  We can even make a person go to sleep after they've had eight hours of sleep simply putting microscopic iron pellets on their eyelids and eyelashes and then using the nanotechnology on an agent's hand or on the floor or on the back of a chair or on a computer to slowly pull their eyes shut."
"They're playing God!"
"And they're just like you and me, RaydGalil.  They can be beaten."
"How?"
"Be aware of all these things.  Especially if you plan to escape to Gian."
"How'd you know?"
"I know TelGara.  She's a romantic woman who would never settle for Galan society.  And just because the Planet Gians have peace treaties doesn't mean they are going to protect you from the Slith.  I'm just trying to give you an awareness of how to obtain a measure of freedom when you leave."
"This technology, how can you stop it?"
"Well like any other technology, it can be intercepted, defeated at the source or prevented.  You intercept it, defeat it at the source, or prevent it from entering the bloodstream or food.  Washing it out of system works too."
"Interceptions you mean like the old earth football games?"
"Sort of.  Same as in soccer today. "
"Turn it off, Lucky."
"No place your hand in front of the glove compartment."
RadyGalil does so.  "It stopped."
"That's interception."
"Remove the lint and pieces of paper and put them in that steel magnetic box on the left inside the glove compartment."
"It stopped."
"That's defeating it at the source."
"If you are eating, if you look closely in your house, you'll notice a tiny white stream falling from the ceiling.  If you meditate you might even see the black iron pellets flying around."
"I might be better off keeping my food covered up while I cook or before I eat it."
"Exactly! These are only a few of the ways to beat the Body Magnet Program."
"Any way to remove it from the blood."
"See that pencil in the back of glove compartment?"
"Yes."
"Remove the eraser."
"RaydGalil does so."
"Shake the pencil's top into your palm."
RadyGalil felt two red pills drop into his palm.
"Take those."  Lucky honked his horn loudly as a thirty year old man with road rage bumper sticker posted on his back window came too close."  "It should break the Body Magnet in your blood."
"Thanks.  I have notice my eyes going to sleep while studying for the officer's exam."
"Just wipe your eyes off with your hand, especially your eye lids.  Heck even a feather duster will wipe the dust, mist, body magnet substance off your clothes, body, walls, desk anywhere.  Your hands with work fine to remove the dust or spritz as well.  But remember, Slith will try to put the pellets right back on.  Keep wiping your eyes."
"What other things to they do?"
"Hide thing or move things using reach-technology."
"Reach technology?"
"That just another name for fucking with your stuff.  They use tiny thin wires, thinner than the old metal coat hangers of Old earth days to grab and pull things.  Take surgery in old earth days, they had soft wires so thin they could stick through your blood veins to see where the heart was clogged or what was happening deep inside the body.  The little wires had cameras on the end.  That same technology is used to see inside notebooks, purses, books--"
"Why books?"
"They put the body magnet substance on the books in various patterns, circles, squiggly lines, stars, squares, whatever to make it hard for your eyes to concentrate on reading.  They may put it on depressing and sad words like failure, lost, defeat, or pain."
"To beat this?"
"Same as before.  Wiping it off the page is good enough.  Slith’s great advantage is secrecy and the belief that no one would want to stop them from reading.  Reading harmless, right?"
"No."
"Exactly what Slith think.  Slith also wants to know what you're reading and watching so they can try to confuse your thinking processes. Memory is malable says modern psychology."
"And . .  a host of other things.  A man," said to me, ‘Gian is a great vacation spot’ while I was shopping.  And of course, we all know it is, but I had been studying the brochures heavily for two days, inside my house."
"They love to use noises too.  They make a noise distraction on the opposite side of the room, in the other direction, 180 degrees away Slith reach inside and grab say your wallet or opera tickets or a person seeing glasses, ID card, money.  They attack in the direct opposite direction of their noise distraction."
"That is sneaky.  You've heard of Ninja?  Ninja don’t do these things, but the theory sounds similar."
Lucky said, "The art of invisibility.  Slith trained in a little of their skills.  For example, hiding in plain sight.  One dresses like a cop or fireman and can go inside a building during an alarm, bomb scare while everyone remains outside."
"Evil sneaky.” RadyGalil said, “Using distractions or you use your environment like a chameleon.  Now it is all beginning to make sense.  I lost my copy of Romeo and Juliet.  I know I left it on the coffee table in plan sight."
"It will show up after they examine every inferred fingerprint, underline, handwritten word on the pages of the book?"
"What about TelGara:"
Got to maneuver in front of this truck.  Lucky drives like a mad man moving in and out of three lanes and finally ahead of the two trucks.  "Slowing down our speed."
"TelGara never had her fingerprints taken and unless Slith has access to our birth records, they won't know who she is?”
“How ever they will know which passages you used and considered using but didn't."
RadyGalil looked anxious.  They can't tell anything." RaydGalil laughed.  "I usually searched more than a dozen passages before finding the right one."
"Good that might hold them.  But they will send random people around, say walking beside you or shopping in line with you who will say various phrases from the book.  Might put R&J phrases on commercials, radio on the front page of a newspaper or magazine.  Remember they have access to any means available in the society to attack and annoy you.  Any means."
"Bastards":
"Plausible Deniability. RadyGalil.  Just don't react.  Act like you've never read Romeo and Juliet in your life."
"Okay, Plausible Deniability.  Use it against them."
"It annoys Slith the worse.  Must get you back to the office. I want you to act like I've insulted you and you don't won't having anything to do with the Slith.  You've go to make it look good, RadyGalil."
"And how will you contact me?"
"I might never contact you again," Lucky said, merging off the freeway.  "It's too dangerous.  I might send someone else to talk to you, but one never knows.  Trust no one.  You have enough information to beat the Body Magnet.  If you think further, you'll find other ways.  The key--Slith is not God.  Slith think they are above God--but they are not!  Everything the Slith does is by some human-made method or technology and you just have to figure a way to block or defeat it."
"Thanks for all you help."
"Start acting."
RaydGalil shouts, and opens the car door before it stops moving. He jumps out. "Slith's the leech of leeches. You try to follow people 24 hours and day and read what they read, watch what they watch.  You think you're God.  You think you're higher than anyone in the universe.  Well I didn't use to believe in a Goddess or a God.  I do now!  Because there's got to be a better system of living than the tyranny, the organized sneaky manipulative tyranny you use on all us Galans.  This war is lost!  Lost I tell you.  Just make peace and get it over with.  That will make us all happy.  Maybe it'll put you agents out of a job--the world will rejoice.  Now fuck off, Sean.  I don't ever want to see or hear from you again."  RaydGalil storms to his car and put the key in, turns and opens it.  He sits and all of sudden the air bag explodes nearly knocking him out."
"We're everywhere RadyGalil.  See!” said Lucky, “You can't get away from us.  Might as well join up."  Lucky then drove off.
